ETTA JAMES "At last" (1961) El 20 de Enero de este mismo año 2012, nos dejó la maravillosa Etta James. Nos dejó para siempre, al fallecer a los 74 años de edad, pero, indudablemente nos quedan sus grabaciones y sus canciones con esa impresionante voz que cautiva en el mismo instante en que se escucha. Ella amaba el gospel, y, de hecho, como muchas otras cantantes norteamericanas, empezaron cantando en el coro de su Iglesia. El tema que les traigo es una concesión a la balada más hermosa y suave que grabara en 1961. Se titula "At last", y, para mí es una joya musical, que, no podía dejar de poner en mis páginas. Nació en 1941 fruto de la inspiración de Mark Gordon y Harry Warren y la tocaba y grabó, Glenn Miller, para la película Orchestra Wives (Viudas del jazz). Etta la adaptó veinte años más tarde, que es la versión que les traigo.

EL ALAMO es una muy buena película del género "western" que en 1960 triunfó en el mundo entero. Ganadora de varios Oscars de la Academia de Hollywood. La música es del ruso Dimitri Tiomkin que formaba parte de la fantástica Banda Sonora de la película, y en la que se escuchaba esta maravillosa melodía "The Green Leaves of Summer". Multitud de versiones en diferentes idiomas (incluído el castellano), pululan a lo largo de los años. En España a destacar la del Dúo Dinámico. Pero la mejor, para mí gusto, es la de THE BROTHERS FOUR, un cuarteto folk de Seattle que la graban y catapultan al éxito.

Era su primer álbum y en francés. Estamos hablando de DESIRELESS una artista francesa que había conseguido un bombazo mundial en 1986 con el archipopular "Voyage, Voyage" (que incluiré más adelante). Pero esta mujer, de aspecto rebelde con un característico peinado, tiene una voz que me cautiva en esa melodía rítmica de 1989. La canción que les traigo hoy en mi Blog se titula "John", y Claudie Fritsch-Mentrop (nombre real de Desireless) la borda. Me encanta su melodía y su cadencia en un tema que quizá es menos popular, pero que significaba su debut en grabar todo un Lp completo. La letra: JOHN

Sonido inconfundible de la maravillosa década de los 80, ya en su último año
HEART es el nombre de esta longeva banda de pop rock norteamericana, con proyección internacional desde los años 70, con paradas y regresos, pero de dilatada carrera. Para mi gusto la canción que más me ha impactado de ellos es este "All I wanna do is make love to you" del álbum BRIGADE. Tema que alcanza el nº2 en las listas de Estados Unidos, y que, hoy, es la entrada nº22 de nuestro Blog. Las hermanas Nancy y ann Wilson al frente.

Tenía previsto el publicar esta canción dentro de poco, porque es una de mis grandes canciones preferidas desde que la escuchara de niño, pero no imaginaba que la publicase hoy para homenajear en cierta medida a ESTELA RAVAL, la voz solista de este gran grupo Los 5 Latinos, que acaba de fallecer hace unos días víctima de cáncer de mama. Estela era descendiente de familia italiana y nacida en la Argentina, cantando desde pequeña y formando este grupo en 1957. Hacían versiones en castellano de temas de Platters y otros grandes éxitos anglosajones (con el devenir de los años y fruto del enorme éxito en España, versionarán canciones españoles de diferentes estilos y épocas, así como canciones italianas, entre otras muchas). Mi canción preferida, y creo que emblemática de la voz cristalina de Estela Raval es el "Quiéreme siempre" de 1958. Versión del tema norteamericano "Love me forever" de Lynes y Guthrie que interpretaban FOUR ESQUIRES en 1957. Maravillosa melodía estilo duduá, con respuestas a modo de coro del grupo masculino a las frases de la solista Estela. Paloma San Basilio, entre otras, grabará una excelente versión en los 80. En 1967 el gran Frank Sinatra graba esa maravillosa "Somethin´stupid" junto a su hija Nancy, y, para mí es una deliciosa canción que siempre me ha encantado. Curiosamente no es la versión original, ya que un año antes la había grabado su autor C. Carson Parks, junto a su esposa Gail Foote. Evidentemente la popularidad de los Sinatra, eclipsó al original, llegando al Nº1 de las listas de ventas en Estados Unidos, lugar que ocuparía durante cuatro semanas, y consiguiendo ser disco de Oro.También en el Reino Unido se instala en el privilegiado lugar, así como en otros Países. La canción habla de la amistad y/ o relación afectiva dada por hecho. Chico y chica que van juntos a todas partes, hasta que él comete la tontería de confesarle su amor.

Después de un tiempo de pausa, retomamos las canciones que me llamaron especialmente la atención en un momento dado de mi vida, niño, adolescente, adulto, maduro...
SHARIF DEAN es un cantante del que apenas conozco dos singles, mejor dicho, tres (en uno de ellos incluía la versión española del tema de hoy). Nacido en Casablanca, de madre francesa y padre argelino, y de nombre auténtico Sharafeddinne Kharroubi, contactó con la música en Francia, donde marchó de niño. Tuvo su mejor éxito con este "Do You Love Me?" Nº1 en muchos Países. Estamos en 1973, y él es el compositor de este romántico tema, super, super, bailable, que hizo las delicias de parejas, formales o no, en un verano mallorquín que yo recuerdo especialmente (por supuesto que bailaron el tema en todo el mundo).
EL AUDIO:
DIETER BOHLEN y THOMAS ANDERS formaban este fantástico dúo de música electrónica y de dance llamado MODERN TALKING. Forjados en su Alemania natal, a mediados de los años ochenta, triunfaban en toda Europa haciendo bailar al personal en toda discoteca. Cantaban en inglés y tenía unos arreglos melódicos excepcionales, que, conjugando con un estilo muy sencillo y directo, lograban un éxito tras otro. Apoyados con una imagen algo andrógina del cantante principal, Thomas Anders, y con unos falsetes marca de la casa, Modern Talking, triunfaron asimismo con los videos musicales tan en boga en esos años ochenta que es su etapa más gloriosa (pese a una pronta separación, apenas duraron cuatro años, reaparecieron de nuevo con arreglos actuales de sus canciones de siempre en 1998 hasta el 2003). De vez en cuando sus álbumes son lanzados con nuevos remixes y versiones de sus temas bailables de sonido único y fácilmente reconocible. Pop sencillo, pero muy exitoso. Podía haber elegido entre varios temas, pero me decanto por este de 1986 "Atlantis is calling (S. O. S. for Love) ".

Canción de mi vida número 16 para MADONNA. La reina del pop tiene su espacio también en este Blog personal. El tema elegido es "Frozen", un tema que salió en 1998 en forma de sencillo, y que fué un impactante éxito de la cantante. Extraído del álbum "Ray of Light", el tema es muy diferente a todo lo que hasta esa fecha había grabado la artista. Sonidos electrónicos y orquesta espectacular con solos de violines, para una canción de larga duración que, de nuevo lanzó a la estrella a lo más alto de la cúspide mundial. Arropada asimismo por un video clip brillante, con múltiples efectos, que catapultan aún más el impacto mediático de esta gran canción.

URGE OVERKILL es un grupo de rock alternativo originario de Chicago que, desde mediados de los 80 está en actividad musical. Poco conocido en España, hasta que grabaron la canción "Girl, You´ll be a Woman soon" del gran Neil Diamond, para ser incluída en la banda sonora de la película de Quentin Tarantino "Pulp fiction". Estamos en 1994, y es un auténtico éxito mundial. (como muchos de los grupos de rock, ha tenido alternancias de miembros, con problemas con drogas y desavenencias entre miembros y alguna pelea). DAWN era el nombre del grupo con que se presentaba TONY ORLANDO en los setenta. Se presentaba rodeado de dos bellas mujeres coristas que conformaban este trío. Grababan con la discográfica BELL y alcanzaron desde los primeros años 70 éxitos en medio mundo, con un pop alegre, pegadizo y comercial (CANDIDA, KNOCK THREE TIMES...). La canción que traigo hoy, número 14 del Blog, es el mundial éxito de DAWN, "Tie a yellow round the ole oak tree", conocida en España en la versión de Los Mismos (Ata una cinta amarilla...alrededor del viejo roble). Cuenta una preciosa historia de amor: un joven comete errores en su juventud y debe sufrir la inevitable condena judicial. Deja a su novia en ese pueblecito donde piensa regresar algún día con ella. Transcurre el tiempo de condena y el muchacho le escribe diciendo que vuelve para encontrarse juntos. Tiene miedo de la reacción de su chica, y le pide que ate una cinta amarilla en el roble donde él le declaró su amor hace años. El autobús que le trae de vuelta pasará muy cerca, si vé que no le acepta se irá con su pena, por el contrario, si observa esa señal, notará que ella aún le quiere pese a su error de juventud. La canción concluye con un hermoso resultado: al pasar cerca del roble, no tan solo vé una cinta amarilla en señal de amor, sino que en el tronco hay cien cintas atadas como prueba irrefutable de ese amor fiel. Número uno en Estados Unidos, Inglaterra y medio mundo (gran éxito en España también).

FOUR TOPS es el nombre del cuarteto de color que en este 1966 consigue un apabullante éxito con la canción que incluyo hoy en la entrada: "Reach out I´ll be there". Magnífico tema con una preciosa orquestación, ritmo y voces, que se ha convertido en todo un clásico de la historia de la música pop/rock. El disco single, que precede al Lp, sale en 1966 y llega en muy poco tiempo al Nº1 de las listas de Estados Unidos y de Inglaterra, aparte de triunfar en medio mundo. Eran en su origen Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obi" Benson y Lawrence Payton, y se fundaron en Detroit en el lejano 1953 con el nombre de The Four Aimes, que cambiaron en 1956. Permanecieron juntos cuatro décadas antes de sufrir inevitables cambios en una legendaria carrera que aún perdura. Su sello de grabación era, como no, Motown.

Segundo sencillo extraído del álbum "Blue Moves", lanzado en 1976. El es el gran músico, compositor y cantante ELTON JOHN, uno de los genios del pop mundial que canta esta maravilla "Sorry seems to be the hardest word", que aquí se tradujo como "Es muy difícil decir perdona". Composición del propio Elton, en colaboración (como era habitual) de Bernie Taupin. Recuerdo que adquirí el single en unos grandes almacenes de Palma, recién abiertos al público, y, justo al regresar a casa lo puse varias veces en mi tocadiscos Better Dual para empaparme de su melodía. TWIN PEAKS era una misteriosa y exitosa serie creada por el mítico David Lynch junto a Mark Frost que la ABC emitió en el año 1991, y que, por supuesto, exportó al mundo entero. Tenía una banda sonora espectacular, compuesta por el músico de origen italiano, nacido en Brooklyn, ANGELO BADALAMENTI, que se había introducido en el cine con "Terciopelo azul" del propio director David Lynbch. Exito de ventas mundial esa banda sonora, envolvente, acariciante y muy, muy misteriosa, es la protagonista de mi entrada de hoy. No hay letra, es la música que distigue la serie, aparece en los títulos de créditos y es el leit motiv de toda la serie.
Es, hasta el momento, la cación más reciente en este Blog, y ya han transcurrido 5 años desde su lanzamieno. Ella era una de las voces más impactantes que he podido escuchar en los últimos tiempos, AMY WINEHOUSE, una londinense que en su vida personal no tuvo suerte y sorteó todo tipo de conflictos: alcohol, drogas, escándalos, problemas legales. Falleció en el 2011, el 23 de Julio contando con 27 años de edad. El tema vuelve a ser un éxito tras su desaparición, llegando al Nº1 de las Listas británicas. Es casi una premonición el título de esta gran canción: "Back to black".

Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr y George Harrison, son los irrepetibles y únicos THE BEATLES. Formados en Liverpool, como todo em mundo sabe, revolucionaron la música juvenil a lo largo de una década, y, por supuesto, tengo que decir que es mi grupo preferido, yo también viví esa explosión juvenil de los "escarabajos", aún siendo niño, y sus melodías y ritmos han quedado ya formando parte de mis recuerdos. Debutan en mi Blog con la cara A del single de 1964 "And I love Her" (como B "If I fell"). La canción es preciosa, romántica y tierna, de un aire muy melancólico, con una guitarra solista que casi habla, como un ritmo casi de cha-cha-chá ralentizado, y es de las que más me han gustado siempre de ellos. Está compuesta por Paul McCartney, aunque firmara con el otro líder del grupo, John Lennon.

El cantante, compositor y productor canadiense TERRY JACKS es el protagonista de hoy. Este tema, que siempre desde que lo descubrí, me ha acompañado en los buenos momentos, "Seasons in the Sun", estaba incluido en el álbum o Lp lanzado con el mismo título en 1973, y que, posteriormente en sencillo o single, fué un bombazo mundial al año siguiente 1974, eso es, Nº1 en Estados Unidos e Inglaterra por citar los mercados más importantes. Aquí en España, asimismo, es un gran éxito. Terry Jacks, metido en tareas ecologistas, aún sigue en activo en el mundo de la música, pero será muy difícil que consiga igualar o superar a su canción estrella y que ya forma parte de la colección de Oro de muchos aficionados.

"A whiter shade of pale", en una de mis canciones de culto de toda la vida, culto compartido por mucha gente aficionada a la música pop, desde que en 1967 saliera este maravilloso tema. Ellos son PROCOL HARUM, una banda fundada apenas hace unos meses en Londres y que, con el sello discográfico Deram Records, lograrán un instantáneo Nº1 en Gran Bretaña y un Top 5 en el mercado de Estados Unidos, (amén de otros tantos números 1 en Europa). PROCOL HARUM eran entonces: Gary Brooker, líder fundador de la Banda, Geoff Dunn, Matt Pegg, Josh Phillips y Geoff Whitehorn. Se les puede considerar como piedra angular en lo que se llamó el rock progresivo, que tanta influencia tuvo en otros muchísimos grupos pop europeos y norteamericanos. "A whiter shade of pale" tiene una letra ambigua, misteriosa y llena de metáforas, arropada por una melodía maravillosa que recuerda un poco a las tocatas de Bach.

Maravillosa la melodía de esta canción de 1969,compuesta por M. Hazlewood y el conocido Albert Hammond, para JOE DOLAN, un cantante irlandés de voz prodigiosa que consigue un fabuloso éxito con este tema que triunfa en medio mundo. De hecho es su primer gran Hit, que proseguírá en la década de los 70 con unas preciosas canciones que, posteriormente, también formarán parte de esa colección mía particular ("Lady in Blue" o "Crazy Woman") .

PETULA CLARK y su "Downtown", prototipo pop británico que siempre me ha gustado. Es sin lugar a dudas su mayor éxito discográfico, consiguiendo con él ser Nº1 en Gran Bretaña y Estados Unidos. Cantante inglesa que disfruta de varios talentos: compositora, actriz de cine y televisión, la elegante Petula cantaba esa preciosa canción en 1964 y 1965 (salió a finales del primero).
